Medicaid Income Requirements for 2024

In order to obtain Medicaid assistance to pay for long-term care, a person must satisfy three basic requirements for the program.  First, the individual must be in “clinical” need of Medicaid assistance.  There must be a medical or underlying health reason for an individual to need help.  An individual must need assistance with certain activities of daily living in order to obtain Medicaid assistance.

The second requirement is “resources”.  A person is not allowed to own a significant amount of assets or resources in order to obtain Medicaid.

The third requirement is “income”.  In the State of New Jersey, a person’s income is not allowed to exceed the Medicaid income cap.

Last year the income cap was $2,742.00.  This means that an individual must be required to have a gross monthly income of less than $2,742.00 in order to obtain Medicaid.  This year the new Medicaid income cap is $2,829.00.  Effective January 1, 2024, an individual must have a gross monthly income of less than $2,829.00 in order to acquire Medicaid assistance.
